The Live-On Project
THE PRE-TEEN YEARS
Treat a child as though he already is the person
he’s capable of becoming.
– Haim Ginott
This age group has more simple needs but requires lots
of encouragement and love. Writing to them involves a
different type of communication. This is not “deep
advice” but rather an encouragement, support and
recognition for their particular needs and well-being.
As you write these letters, think about your child and
the types of things you think they may want to hear, but
also the types of things you would say.
Many of these letters are there “just because” or if your
child is feeling blue that day. Some of the letters may
even seem silly and insignificant. Just do what you feel
comfortable doing. When in doubt on whether you
should write a letter, go ahead and do it. You should
give some letters to your child now, as soon as they can
read, or save some for next year or five years from now.
Maybe they are used when you are on a business trip or
during a military deployment, or maybe this section
inspires you to communicate more with your kids now.
It is almost impossible to say how they will eventually be
used but as long as you write them, preserve them, and
someone else knows where they are and their purpose,
they are guaranteed to have an impact in some way.
