together! Upon reflection, they must have felt the same
way; just trying their best to raise good kids. Their
words of encouragement, hope, humor and confidence
show me that they were really positive people who did a
lot for me. Maybe I forgot about that over the years.
These letters were likely meaningful to me when I first
received them, but now, reading them 32 years later,
they have even more value. My mom was easing my
homesickness after my 20-year-old self tearfully
proclaimed that I wanted to return home.
“Hi Lori, I felt really bad the other night when you called. I know you
miss everyone, but this is something that you can only do when you are
young and single. Everyone gets homesick, it will take time. This is the
first time you have been on your own, it’s like going to college, right?
Oh well enough of that!!! Fine.”
My dad referenced when he left Sicily for the first time
and how it made him a better person.
