The most important thing that parents can teach their
children is how to get along without them.

A Happy Discovery of My Own Letters
            A
fter I had written this workbook, I made a pretty
awesome discovery. Buried deep inside a sealed
bag that I carried from move to move, I found
letters my parents hand-wrote to me thirty-two
years ago! It was really quite amazing to read these. In
my case, I first read these letters 30 years ago. Over the
years I forgot l even had them so when I read them
again recently, it was like reading them for the first
time. My parents wrote them when I traveled abroad to
England in my junior year of college. Email was just
getting popular but the majority still did not use it.
Facebook did not exist. We made phone calls to each
other but they were still considered expensive. In any
absence from each other, we wrote letters.

My mom and dad wrote these letters when they were
45 and 47, respectively. At the time, they seemed older
and wiser people who had it all together. I am about to
be 43 myself and I often do not feel like I have it
