The Live-On Project
Hector a letter that she may have written 5, 10, 20, or 30
years previously. Hector is very touched that Carol took
this time so many years ago. Hector’s kids always
eagerly anticipate when they will receive the next
“granny letter,” as they call them. Other grandmas give
gifts of ice cream and toys, but their grandma gave
them a snapshot into their past and knowledge about
who they are and where they come from.
Cami’s daughter always feels the spirit of
her mom even through long separations:
Cami is married with a newborn Gianna and is in the
Army. She often is stationed overseas with
deployments as long as one year. Her latest
deployment began when her daughter was 6 months
old. It was incredibly hard for her to leave but she has a
duty to honor the flag and her country. Gianna misses
out on certain things as her mom cannot be there, such
as school open houses or music recitals. She loves her
mom but feels that she does not have the presence or
role in her life like her dad does.
But what if…
Before she left for each deployment, Cami recorded
several videos so her daughter would remember her
voice. She sang songs, read books, and just talked to
her daughter. She also wrote some long letters, just in
