Good Practice 1. Un-Busy Yourself.
Do you live a “busy life?” There is something called the
“glorification of busy.” We are not only busy, but we
claim it as a badge of honor. But, it seems to be less
“busyness,” as it is the unwillingness to set priorities.
Someone put it to me once by saying, “What if you got
in an accident and had to be in the hospital for two
weeks? The rest of your life would stop by dealing with
that, right? So that means it is possible to put many
things on hold if something else has higher priority.”
That really spoke to me. We decide our lives every day.
We control when we get up, when we go to bed (I can
see parents of newborns groaning here), and what we
do during the day.
I think the first step is being honest with yourself. How
often, when someone asks how you are, do you say,
“I’m busy?” If you are like anyone else, you say it often!
And the person you say it to will, of course, nod their
head and agree, “Life is busy. I get it. I can’t even tell
you how tired I am from working with my horrible boss,
driving Jake to practice every night then having to cook
dinner and bathe the younger kids, not to mention
putting them to bed and then finally pouring my glass
